“Sin is like poison. When you sin, it is as if you drank poison; you are the one who is going to be poisoned, it does not matter how you drank it or who gave it to you. It is useless to blame others when you get poisoned and die.”

“The ignorant man clings to the dust until he becomes dust; the wise and prudent man clings to heaven until he reaches heaven. You will belong to the place to which you cling.”

The Maronite Lenten season begins with the “Entrance into Great Lent” on the Wedding Feast at Cana Sunday which was yesterday. The fast starts today, February 15, Ash Monday. Today, the Maronite Church, all over the world, blesses and distributes ashes. During the Divine Liturgy, the priest blesses the ashes with a special prayer and kneads it in Holy water. At the end of the Liturgy, the faithful are blessed with the ashes in the form of a cross on their forehead with the priest saying: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
For you, LORD, give light to my lamp; my God brightens my darkness.
With you I can rush an armed band, with my God to help I can leap a wall. Psalm 18:29-30 Photo by Oliver Hihn on Unsplash In portraying St. Sharbel, Fr. Hanna Skandar states in his book “Saint Sharbel, From His Era to Ours”:
“His face reflected his devotion and love of God at all times, particularly during prayer. A heavenly light illuminated his face because the Lord was his strength, his wealth and his permanent joy. His naturally pale face was tanned by the sun. Due to many mortifications of the flesh and long nights of prayerful vigil, he became very thin, but he walked quickly even in his old age. He was ardent in all his affairs.” Saint Sharbel, pray for us. Send us your abundant blessings, through the mercy of your Christ.”
