The Holy Rosary, Its importance, Fruits and Connection with the Virgin Mary

By Fr. Kamil AlChouefati
Introduction: The Holy Rosary is one of the most beautiful prayers given to us by the Church. It brings together prayer and meditation, the Gospel and the life of the Virgin Mary, the heart and the mind.

When we hold the Rosary in our hands, we are not running away from the problems of life, nor are we looking for a magical solution to our difficulties. Rather, we enter with Mary into the School of Jesus. We pray with her, we meditate with her, and through her life we learn how to live our faith in moments of joy and suffering, success and temptation, waiting and hope. At its heart, the Rosary is a Christ-centered prayer, and Mary leads us to Him.

What is the Holy Rosary? The Rosary is a chain of prayers and meditations on the most important events in the life of Jesus Christ, seen through the heart of His Mother, Mary.
We pray: the Our Father – the Hail Mary – the Glory be. The Rosary is a prayer of the heart and the mind. Every Hail Mary should take us deeper into the mystery of Christ.

Why is the rosary connected with the Virgin Mary? Because Mary lived the Mysteries of Christ in a unique way. She carried Christ in her womb, gave birth to Him, raised Him, accompanied Him, stood at the foot of His Cross, rejoiced in his resurrection, and remained with the disciples awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit. When we pray the Rosary, we learn from Mary how to contemplate Christ. The Gospel tells us: “But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Lk. 2:19).

The Rosary is a School of the Gospel. Every group of mysteries takes us to a different page of the Gospel.

- The Joyful Mysteries: they take us to: 1- The Annunciation. 2- The Visitation. 3- The Birth of Jesus. 4- The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. 5- The Finding of Jesus in the Temple.

- The Luminous Mysteries: they take us through the public ministry of Jesus: 1- His Baptism in the Jordan. 2- The Wedding at Cana. 3- The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God. 4- The Transfiguration. 5- The Institution of the Eucharist.

- The Sorrowful Mysteries: They bring us to: 1- Jesus’ Agony in the Garden. 2- His Scourging at the Pillar. 3- His Crowning with Thorns. 4- His Carrying of the Cross. 5- His Crucifixion and Death.

- The Glorious Mysteries: they lead us to: 1- The Resurrection. 2- The Ascension. 3- The Descent of the Holy Spirit. 4- The Assumption of Mary. 5- The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. They remind us that the Cross is not the end; the Resurrection is the destiny God desires for His children.

- How Should we pray the Rosary? There is always a danger that the Rosary can become simply an automatic repetition of words. Therefore, when we pray the Rosary, we can follow these simple steps: 1- Choose an intention for your prayer. 2- Announce the Mystery. 3- Read, for a recall, a short Gospel scene. 4- Pause for a moment and ask: “What is this mystery saying to me today? 5- Pray the Our Father and the Hail Mary slowly and consciously. In this way, the Rosary becomes a living meditation on the life of Christ.

- What are the Fruits of the Rosary in the life of the believer?
1- The Rosary leads us to Christ. Some people may think that the Rosary is simply a prayer to Mary. But the truth is that the center of the Rosary is Jesus Christ. Every mystery we contemplate comes from the life of Jesus. At Cana, Mary said, “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn. 2:5). This is always Mary’s role: to lead us to her Son.

2- The Rosary gives us inner peace. We live in a world filled with noise, anxiety, news, worries, and problems. Sometimes we simply need to become silent. The Rosary helps us enter that silence. Hail Mary after Hail Mary, bead after bead, prayer after prayer, the heart begins to calm down. This does not mean that our problems disappear. Rather, our way of looking at our problems begins to change. We place everything in God’s hands and say: “Lord, I cannot carry everything, but I place everything into your hands”.

3- The Rosary teaches us patience and perseverance. The Rosary requires perseverance. We may pray it when we are tired, distracted, or when we do not feel anything special. Yet we continue. And here we learn an important spiritual lesson: Faith is not always a feeling; faith is fidelity and perseverance. Just as our body needs food every day, our heart needs prayer every day.

4- The Rosary can become a family prayer. One of the most beautiful fruits of the Rosary is praying at home. When a family comes together to pray the Rosary, and place their intentions before God, (father, mother, children), prayer becomes a spiritual bond among its members.

5- The Rosary and the Cross. It is meaningful that we begin the Rosary with the sign of the cross. Why? Because from the beginning we proclaim that our salvation is found in Jesus Christ, crucified and risen from the dead. The Rosary therefore connects us with three realities: The Cross – Christ – Mary. Mary was not distant from the Cross; she stood there. And this teaches us that faith does not mean living without a cross. It means learning how to carry our cross with Christ.

6- The Rosary in Times of suffering and illness. How many people find themselves without words in moments of suffering. At such times, the Rosary can become the prayer of the heart.

7- The Rosary and Repentance. The Rosary can also help us examine our lives. When we contemplate the life of Christ, we begin to see ourselves more clearly.
Am I humble? Do I forgive? Do I love? Do I live according to the Gospel? Do I put God first in my life? Is there someone I have not forgiven? Is there a sin that refuses to leave?
In this way, the Rosary becomes more than a prayer we repeat. It becomes an invitation to change our lives.

8- The Rosary and Mary’s intercession. When we say: “Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.” We ask Mary to pray with us and for us.
This expresses the believer’s trust in the Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Church. We do not put Mary in the place of Christ. Rather, we ask for her intercession because she always leads us to Christ. Even at the hour of death, the Rosary remains a prayer of hope.

9- The Rosary and Union with God. The greatest fruit of the Rosary is not simply finishing five decades. The real fruit is to finish the Rosary closer to Jesus, more peaceful, more capable of loving and forgiving. If we pray the Rosary and then continue to hate, hold grudges, refuse to forgive, and fail to love, then we have missed the spirit of our prayer. But if the Rosary makes us more humble, more merciful, more loving, and more faithful to the Gospel, then the Rosary has truly become a prayer that bears fruit in our lives.

Conclusion.
Dear brothers and sisters,

Let us never underestimate the power of the Rosary. It may appear to some people to be a simple prayer, but in reality, it is a spiritual weapon, a school of faith, and a path that leads us to Jesus Christ. Every time we hold the Rosary in our hands, we remember that we have a heavenly Mother who walks with us. And when we reach the difficult moments of our lives, when I am afraid, when I am suffering, when I have sinned, when I need forgiveness, and when I rejoice, we can say: Mary, take me to Jesus. Because Mary’s entire mission can be summed up in her words at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you”.

And so, the Rosary becomes not only a prayer we pray, but a life we learn to live with Christ, with Mary’s heart, and within the embrace of the Church.

Mary, Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church, teach us to pray, and lead our whole lives to Jesus your Son. Amen.
